They don't cost as much as newer units but, they still produce finds if your willing to take the time to learn how to use them.

Many are heavier than today's models, require more batteries and are not depth demons in Discriminate mod. Use them to hunt in VLF mode and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the depth they achieve. Especially if you buy the top of the line models. Performance can rival some of the most expensive machines today.

There is a renewed interest in the older units, not only as collector items but, as units to actually use. Prices on older units from the late 1970's-1990's has steadily increased over the past few years. Some brands and models are very popular, Treasure Hunter's are paying almost what they cost brand new 20-30 years ago. Amazing!

I am particular to the late 1979-81 D-tex models SK and CK series. They look nice and detect deeply in VLF mode. I am having good luck with my current SK50. I have been able to hunt in VLF mode and able to distinguish between coins and no coins. Occasionally I will switch to TR Disc. mode to check the item before digging. Wonderful machines. Garrett 4 pin connector searchcoils made for the Garrett Master Hunter will fit the SK models and the Groundhog coils will fit the CK models.

Another series I enjoy using are the Fisher 500 series, especially the 553/D & 555/D. Extremely smooth in VLF operation and very deep. They like silver coins. These units are heavy, no way around it. Below is a picture of a 552/D.

There are many other brands that are in demand. The Compass and Teknetics Mark 1 are a couple of them.

I have updated my website with more information of the above units and others. With manual and catalog downloads......more to add over the next 4 months or so.

Currently I am looking for a D-tex 10" 5khz concentric searchcoil for my SK50. If you come across one please let me know.
