Andronicus II
Andronicus II

Andronicus II

1282-1328 The son of Michael VIII, Andronicus succeeded to the throne after Michael's death and immediately called off battle plans against the rebel Nicephorus to return to Constantinople. With the crown came the responsibilities of steering a ragged empire through tough straights. Unfortunately, he was a man left with few resources to accomplish much of anything with little of the charisma or drive that Michael had possessed. In an effort to stimulate popularity he repealed the widely hated theological concessions made to the Vatican. But this only went so far in correcting an interminable list of problems facing the Byzantines. To name a few, the Turks began encroaching from the East, various parties from Europe wreaked havoc in the western provinces, the oppressive taxes levied on his subjects (mostly to pay the mercenary soldiers) made enemies within and fostered frequent revolts and so on. Andronicus just couldn't deal with all these problems and spent his long years on the throne contemplating the steady losses unable to provide any respite. Finally, his own son Andronicus III managed to oust him and force his retirement.
