Justin I
Justin I

Justin I

518-527 Through hard work and who knows what else, Justin spent nearly his whole life in the army serving first under Zeno and then Anastasius while slowly climbing the ranks. Once old Anastasius passed away without leaving an heir nor a named successor Justin's people made sure he'd get voted in without much effort. He may well have been an exemplary soldier but he was definitely not the right man for the job. By then a decrepit old man without any skill in diplomacy, his nephew Justinian was really the "mover and shaker" of the administration. Justin kind of drifted away from the spotlight until he died too, leaving Justinian without the anchor he must have considered his uncle to be.
